“Our first Sussex County Cup match, we travelled to face Southwick U18s. Unfortunately, there is no U17s cup so we were competing against players 1-2 years older than us.
Our first 15 mins we played well but seemed to drift off and lose concentration. This lead to a player being unmarked who had plenty of time to cross the ball into our box for a good finish by their striker.
HT saw us trailing 1-0.
I told the players we needed more in the second half and to raise their game. The whole match was pretty physical and players were feeling it.
We improved our game and Jack S had a straight run into the box but was taken down by their keeper and the ref awarded a penalty. Cool as a cucumber Charlie scored a great penalty to level the match.
With around 15 mins of the 90 to play, it was then a contest to see which team could hold on and get a winner. We held firm and although did not convert our chances we finished the match 1-1.
Straight to pens, which was full of drama! The end result we won the shootout 5-4 after six penalties each.
The team were ecstatic to win even on a day when we didn’t play our best. Miles made some great saves and stopped two pens. Jack S got us the pen and also headed the ball off the line to keep us in the match. Mason who’s heart rate went off the scale scored a very precise penalty to win the shootout.
I am thrilled for all the players that put in sheer hard work to grind out a positive result and take us through to the next round. I awarded the whole team Player Of The Match as it was a team performance to get us there.
Well played everyone 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻”
